Summer: A Good Time for Cosmetic Procedures

Posted by Reza Momeni, MD on July 21, 2014, noon

If you have delayed a cosmetic procedure because work, school, family, and other demands leave you with little or no time to undergo and recover from surgery, consider having a procedure to refresh your look during the summer months.

In addition to summer being more relaxed than the rest of the year, summer can allow you to combine vacation with recovery time while still enjoying beautiful weather. You can play “staycation” by taking time off and staying at home to have your procedure, or you can take a few days off from work around the weekend and return to your job looking healthy and refreshed!

Some moms take advantage of having kids away at camp so that they can have a mommy makeover, breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, liposuction, and thigh sculpting.

Cosmetic procedures that are ideal for summer staycation include:

Breast augmentation
After breast augmentation surgery, you need at least a week off from work and other vigorous activities. Although you will need to rest, you don’t have to spend the entire week in bed! You can enjoy recovering in the shade of your deck with a good book. Once you’re feeling strong, you can visit with friends to help pass the time. Oral over-the-counter and prescription medications can help manage any discomfort or soreness you might have for the first few days. Swelling and bruising will begin to subside after several weeks. Although it can take many months for all your swelling to go away entirely, you will immediately see a remarkable improvement in the look of your breasts after breast augmentation surgery.

Liposuction
Liposuction removes unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. In most cases, you can return to work 2 or 3 days after minimal liposuction procedures. More involved liposuction can require 2 to 3 weeks to recover, so using summer vacation for a comprehensive liposuction procedure is a good idea. You will have some bruising and swelling that can last several or more weeks. Many patients who have liposuction also wear compression garments to minimize swelling. Although you are unlikely to plan outings after liposuction, the summer months are a good time to take a break from your routine to have and recover from the procedure.

Rhinoplasty
You can use your summer staycation to recover as needed after nose reshaping surgery (rhinoplasty). Your surgeon can prescribe pain relievers or recommend over-the-counter medication to help manage your discomfort during the time you are at home. During the first week after your rhinoplasty, you will need and want to rest. By the second week, your bruising will begin to resolve and swelling will be less noticeable. That’s when you’ll begin seeing the beautiful results of your newly sculpted nose!

Eyelid surgery
You might feel some minimal discomfort after eyelid surgery. Swelling and bruising should last 10 to 14 days. Most people return to work and resume normal activities in about 2 weeks after eyelid surgery.

Chin implant surgery
After having chin implant surgery, you will have some bruising, swelling, tingling, and tightness that will begin to subside after about 2 weeks. You must sleep sitting up for several nights to help minimize swelling. In about a week, you can return to work and resume non-strenuous activities.

Avoiding the Sun After Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Procedures
Cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. The sun also can darken scars. Getting too much sun can increase swelling in the treated area. If you must be outside after your surgery, wear protective clothing and sunscreen with a sun protective factor (SPF) of 30 or more.
