Face and Neck Lift
Face Lift and Neck Lift
Face lift and neck lift surgery (rhytidectomy) can rejuvenate the face and neck, taking years off your appearance. It can decrease jowls, sagging cheeks, and creases around the mouth. During the procedure, fatty tissue, muscle, and skin around the jaw line, neck, and cheeks are tightened and smoothed, reducing wrinkles and folds.
The extent of the procedure depends on your individual needs and desires. You are a good candidate for a facelift and necklift if your skin has retained some elasticity and you have well-defined facial bone structure. Most people who get facelift and necklift surgery are between 40 and 70 years of age.
Remember that a face lift and neck lift only affect the lower part of the face. To create the most polished, balanced results, you also might want to have eyelid surgery, a chin implant, cheek implants, brow lift, forehead lift, or Botox. Ask your plastic surgeon what options will give you the best outcome.
A consultation for a facelift and neck lift includes a discussion of your desires, expectations, and concerns as well as limits and risks of the procedure. Your surgeon will take pictures of your face and neck and carefully examine you. He or she will ask you about your medical history and discuss what you can expect before, during, and after your surgery.
Your surgery will be performed under general anesthesia and you will probably need to stay in the hospital overnight. The surgery generally takes 3 to 5 hours. After the dressings have been changed the day after surgery, most patients are allowed to go home.
Your incisions usually can be hidden in the hairline or behind the ears. Excess skin and fatty tissue is removed, and the overlying skin is then gently tightened and stitched into place.
Recovery and Results
You will be given thorough written instructions to prepare for and recover from your procedure. Dressings will be applied to your incisions, and tubes may be placed to drain any excess fluids during the first day or 2 of healing. Stitches are removed in our offices a week or 2 after your procedure. Sometimes the stitches must be removed in stages.
You can expect some minor swelling, bruising, and pain after surgery. Oral over-the-counter or prescription medications can be taken to manage any discomfort you experience. The swelling and bruising should subside within 2 to 3 weeks. You also might feel some tightness and/or numbness for a period of time after your procedure.
You will need to sleep sitting up for a few days to reduce swelling, but you should be able to return to work and normal, nonstrenuous activities in about 2 weeks. You should avoid wearing makeup for about a week. Do not dye your hair for a couple of months after a facelift, and be careful to wear sun block for at least 6 months after your procedure.
You will need to follow up with your surgeon periodically for a year to check on your progress.
You will not be able to enjoy the final results of your surgery for several months, but you should be able to see some results quickly. Scars are rarely visible. Although the results following a facelift and neck lift are long lasting, some people consider an additional procedure to retighten the face after 5 to 10 years.
