Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) New Jersey

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can correct droopy, baggy upper or lower eyelids. The procedure results in more rested, rejuvenated, brighter eyes for an overall younger looking face. Your eyes may even look larger.

The procedure usually involves removing excess fat, skin, and muscle. To tighten and reduce wrinkles in the lower part of the face, you may decide to have a face lift and neck lift at the same time as your eyelid surgery.

Blepharoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries performed today. Most of the people who have eyelid surgery are aged 35 or older, but you can have the surgery at any age if you have inherited drooping eyelids or bags under your eyes.

When eyelid plastic surgery is a medical necessity, such as when a drooping eyelid impairs vision, your insurance plan may cover it. If you are considering eyelid surgery, ask your surgeon whether he or she believes your surgery is medically necessary.

Your Consultation

Your consultation for upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid surgery involves a discussion of your expectations and concerns as well as the limits and risks. Your surgeon will review your medical history, particularly regarding any issues with your eyes. He or she will examine your eyes and eyelids and take pictures of your upper face.

The Procedure

Eyelid surgery is usually performed in our ambulatory surgery center. You will be given local anesthesia and intravenous sedation, which will allow you to remain awake, relaxed, and unable to feel pain.

Depending on your needs, several different surgical techniques are available. In some cases, laser techniques can achieve the outcome you want without the need for incisions. If you have incisions, they are usually tiny and made in eyelid creases where you will not feel or see your scars.

Lower eyelid surgery is particularly delicate. You need an experienced surgeon like ours at Summit Medical Group to ensure an excellent result.

After the incisions are made, your surgeon will remove excess skin and fat. Blepharoplasty generally lasts less than 2 hours.

Recovery and Results

You will receive thorough written instructions to prepare for and recover from your surgery. You may experience some minimal discomfort after eyelid surgery, which you can manage with oral over-the-counter or prescription medications. If you have stitches that do not dissolve, we will remove them 5 to 14 days after your procedure.

You can expect to experience some swelling and bruising that usually resolves within 10 to 14 days. You should be able to return to work and normal activities after about 2 weeks. For the first few nights, you may need to sleep upright to reduce swelling. You also might be given an ointment and/or eye drops to put in your eyes for a few days.
