Breast Reduction for Men

Breast Reduction for Men New Jersey

One in 3 American men has enlarged breasts, sometimes with enlarged or puffy nipples. The condition is called gynecomastia. It is usually caused by hormonal changes and can occur during infancy, adolescence, or as a result of aging.

Gynecomastia is not usually serious, but it is sometimes associated with diseases such as breast cancer, liver disease, lung cancer, adrenal or glandular tumors, congenital syndromes, thyroid disorders, or trauma. For this reason, you should see a doctor if you are a man with enlarged breasts.

Most of all, gynecomastia can be embarrassing. The best solution is to surgically reduce the breast tissue and reshape the chest for a masculine appearance.

The plastic surgeons at Summit Medical Group are experienced in breast reduction for men. In addition, they are sensitive to your need for confidentiality.

Your Consultation

A consultation for male breast reduction includes a thorough discussion of your concerns. Your surgeon will examine your chest and discuss your options with you. He also will give you a thorough description of the procedure and discuss its limits and risks.

The Procedure

Male breast reduction surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure at our ambulatory center. It can take 1 to 2 hours and is almost always performed under general anesthesia. This means that you will be too sleepy to drive yourself home after your surgery.

Breast reduction surgery for men involves removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the chest to make the area firm and masculine. Complicated gynecomastia conditions might require an incision to remove excess tissue and tighten the surrounding skin.

Depending on your needs and desires, your surgeon will perform one of the following types of male breast reduction surgery:

  • Suction lipectomy, in which breast tissue is tapered for a natural-looking result
  • Endoscopic surgery, in which a tiny incision is made in the chest to insert a small, flexible tube with a light and a camera. This approach allows the surgeon to examine the tissue under the skin and remove excess tissue without making a large incision

Recovery and Results

You will see results immediately, but it might take 6 months before you can see the final result of your procedure.

After surgery, you will be wrapped in an elastic bandage over gauze dressings. The bandages will be replaced within 2 days after surgery. It will take several weeks until bruising and swelling completely subside. Some men report feeling sore for a week or more after surgery.

Most patients receive dissolvable stitches. It might take as much as a year for the scars to become less obvious. The plastic surgeons at Summit Medical Group are experts in their field and will make every effort to reduce scarring.

Most men can return to work within a few days after surgery. You should avoid strenuous activity and exercise for about 4 weeks.
