Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation New Jersey (Breast Implants)

If you want to enhance the size, contour, and feel of your breasts, breast implants may be right for you. The goal of breast augmentation is to create fuller, natural-looking breasts that increase your self-confidence and help your clothes fit better.

Breast augmentation is a procedure that uses saline or silicone implants to:

  • Increase breast size in women who believe their breasts are too small
  • Correct slightly sagging breasts
  • Increase breast volume that has been lost as a result of aging, weight loss, or breast feeding and pregnancy
  • Correct uneven (asymmetrical) or deformed breasts
  • Restore breasts to a normal appearance after mastectomy (breast reconstruction)

Sometimes breast augmentation is performed at the same time as a breast lift.

Your Consultation

A consultation for breast augmentation includes a discussion of how you would like your breasts to look as well as your concerns about the procedure. Your surgeon will examine you and tell you about the different types and shapes of breast implants. He or she also will recommend saline or silicone implants and explain the limits and risks of breast augmentation.

The Procedure

You may have breast augmentation in our office operating suite or as an outpatient at the hospital. Intravenous sedation or general anesthesia may be used. Breast augmentation surgery typically lasts 2 hours or less.

The location of the incisions depends on your anatomy, goals, and the type of implant you choose. Our surgeons will make every effort to ensure that your incisions are as small as possible. The most common incisions are under the arms or in the natural crease beneath each breast where they can be hidden.

During breast augmentation, a space (or pocket) is created under the breast. The implant is then placed behind or in front of the chest muscle, depending on whether you have chosen saline or silicone implants. Most patients receive dissolvable stitches.

Recovery and Results

You will be given thorough written instructions to prepare for and recover from your breast augmentation surgery. The instructions will include ways to prevent infection and when to follow up with your surgeon.

Most patients can go home within a few hours after the procedure. Your surgeon will apply dressings to the incision areas and wrap your breasts in bandages.

After surgery, you may feel sore for several days. If necessary, you can take oral over-the-counter or prescription medications to manage any discomfort. Bruising is usually minimal, but swelling can last for several weeks. For this reason, you will not be able to see the final results of your breast augmentation for a few weeks. You will, however, see an immediate difference in the appearance of your breasts.

You should be able to return to work within a week of your surgery. You will be required to wear a surgical bra and limit activities for several weeks. You should sleep only on your back and avoid lifting anything heavy or exercising vigorously for about a month. Regular examinations and routine mammograms can help ensure that any complications are detected and treated early.

Most women are thrilled with the results of their breast augmentation.
