Body Contouring After Weight Loss (Postbariatric Skin Tightening)

People who have lost a significant amount of weight or have had bariatric surgery for weight loss are the fastest growing group of plastic surgery patients. Significant weight loss can cause skin to sag severely and also cause rashes, infections, and hygiene issues.

If you have had weight loss surgery or lost a lot of weight from diet and exercise, your clothes may not fit properly and you may have loose skin that makes you feel self-conscious. Body contouring surgery can tighten and reduce the extra skin on your neck, arms, chest, breasts, abdomen, back, thighs, and buttocks, giving you a more normal appearance.

As long as you are in good general health, you are probably a good candidate for plastic surgery after weight loss. The skin-tightening procedure also is popular with women after pregnancy. See the Mommy Makeover page for more information. Body contour procedures may be performed at the same time as other plastic surgery procedures to create the most polished look possible.

Your Consultation

A consultation for body contouring after weight loss includes a thorough discussion of your desires, expectations, and concerns as well as limits and risks of the surgery. Your surgeon will review your medical history and recommend the best options for you. He or she will thoroughly examine your overall body contour and take pictures of the areas you would like to improve. Your surgeon may recommend that you have more than one procedure to achieve your goals.

The Procedure

Depending on the amount of weight you have lost and location of your excess skin, you might want to consider one or more cosmetic procedures to tighten your skin and improve your appearance:

  • Liposuction to remove small amounts of remaining fat from your hips, thighs, and/or abdomen to create smooth, pleasing contours
  • Tummy tuck to remove excess skin and tighten abdominal muscles for a more slender waistline and flatter stomach
  • Arm lift to remove excess skin and create tighter, firmer upper arms
  • Thigh lift to tighten excess skin and smooth your thighs
  • Lower body and buttock lift to create smoother, tighter contours in your lower body
  • Breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast lift with implants to restore natural breast volume and lift the bust line
  • Mommy makeover to contour the body after pregnancy
  • Body lift to remove excess skin and fat from the arms, thighs, abdomen, and buttocks in a comprehensive procedure

Please click on the links above for more information about each procedure. While some of the surgeries can be done at the same time, you may need to have more than one surgery to achieve the results you want.

Recovery and Results

You will be given thorough written instructions to prepare for and recover from your surgery. Some procedures require more time to return to normal activities than others. Visit the pages for the procedures mentioned above to learn what you can expect after your surgeries.

Results are typically long lasting for each procedure; however, you must manage your weight to maintain your new body contours.
