Sun Spot Removal
Laser Sun Spot Removal
Sun spots, freckles, birthmarks, and age spots (sometimes called solar lentigos and liver spots) are very common. When they are abundant, large, blotchy, or dark, they can detract from the beauty of your skin.
Many sun damage spots develop later in life. Birthmarks, however, are hereditary. Whatever the cause, advancements in laser technology make it possible to safely remove brown spots and restore your skin to a more even and youthful tone. Today’s technology even can be tailored to match your skin type.
A consultation for sun spot removal, age spot removal, or birthmark removal begins with a discussion of your desires and concerns. Your doctor will carefully examine your skin and tell you what you can expect, including limits and risks of laser treatment.
Summit Medical Group uses the most technologically advanced lasers available. Laser sun spot removal is a nonsurgical, noninvasive procedure that works for all skin types. The procedure can be done on the face, hands, neck, or chest. It is performed under local anesthesia in our outpatient surgery suite.
The laser generates a beam of light that destroys only the unwanted skin cells, removing the brown spots and leaving the healthy skin alone.
The procedure usually lasts 90 minutes or less, depending on the number of areas to be treated. Combined treatments may be necessary depending on your individual issues and needs. The doctor will be able to estimate how many treatments you will probably need to achieve your desired result.
Recovery and Results
You will be given thorough written instructions to prepare for and recover from your laser sun spot removal procedure. The instructions will include aftercare instructions. Most patients experience almost no discomfort or downtime after laser treatment. You can return to normal activities immediately.
Any redness or inflammation will subside and resolve shortly. Some patients might experience crusting of the treated area for a day or 2.
Laser sun spot removal is usually permanent; however, sun exposure can cause new sun damage or previous spots to return. After treatment, your plastic surgeon will encourage you to wear sunscreen to prevent the treated areas from becoming discolored again.
