Juvéderm & Voluma®

Juvéderm Voluma® replaces facial fullness and supports the structure of the skin.

Overview

Juvéderm Voluma® XC is a safe, effective injectable dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally exists in your skin. Voluma is the first FDA-approved product in the U.S. specifically for age-related loss of volume in the midface. Therefore, it is primarily used to restore lost fullness in the cheeks and under the eyes. With the experience we have gained from using Voluma, we have also often found it effective for use off-label in other areas of the face, when our clinical judgment indicates it.

Research has shown that we lose about a teaspoon of fatty tissue from each side of the face every year. Voluma replaces that fullness and supports the structure of the skin. In addition to smoothing areas that have lost support, Voluma can be used to help hide new wrinkles and folds.

One of the greatest advantages of Voluma is that it can last up to 24 months in some patients. Others find that they need a touchup visit for a smaller-volume, additional injection within 9 to 12 months to maintain the same initial effect for the 2-year duration.

Prior to the introduction of Voluma, physicians added volume to the mid-face by using fillers that were primarily designed for the smile lines around the mouth. The results were reasonably good but not as good as Voluma. Because Voluma is longer-lasting and helps to preserve a fuller, younger look than some other facial fillers, many patients prefer it, although other fillers may be preferable for different areas of the face.

Another advantage of Voluma is that its results are immediate. Right after your treatment, you will notice fuller, rounder facial contours, which will make your face appear softer and younger.

Voluma also contains lidocaine for comfort and is the best way to non-surgically restore a more youthful appearance to the midface. Many patients use it as an alternative to a mini-face lift or cheek implants.

All dermal filler injections, including Voluma, are performed in our office by our surgeons. Due to their extensive knowledge of facial anatomy, each of our surgeons is able to determine the optimal locations for your injections in order to provide the best possible result. The aesthetic eye of the surgeon, coupled with experience, allows him to analyze the features of your face and determine where to place the filler expertly so that your face is restored as much as possible to how you looked a few years ago.

Since hyaluronic acid is a substance already contained in the body, Voluma is very safe. It has been used with outstanding results in 72 countries. Hyaluronic acid is important in the body’s natural wound-healing process, and it has been safely and effectively used for many medical purposes, including eye surgeries, joint injections, and treatment for eczema, among others. Although highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid are found in fluids in the eyes and joints, the substance is also contained in the connective tissues of skin and cartilage.

“Voluma brought back my youthful face!  Dr. Momeni took his time to explain the procedure and was aware of my needs, and did exactly as I asked. He was cautious and did not ‘overdo it.’”

Who is a Candidate?

Who is a Candidate for Juvéderm Voluma®?

Voluma® is approved and ideal for women and men age 21 years and older. Younger patients in their 30s and 40s often only need 1 or 2 syringes to obtain the desired effect, while patients age 50 years or older sometimes need more of the product to provide the amount of volume needed for outstanding results.

Voluma works well in people of all skin types, including those with darker skin. It is not a replacement for a facelift, but it is perfect for those who want a non-surgical solution for adding volume to the cheek area, gently lifting sagging skin, and giving an overall younger appearance to the face.

You do not have to be older to benefit from Voluma. Even people in their 30s and 40s who have gained and lost weight can experience hollowness in the cheeks. Whether you are a savvy professional who wants to look as young as you feel, a homemaker who wants to preserve the beauty of your face and skin for years to come, or an older person who wants to turn back the years, Voluma can provide a minimally invasive solution.

We often combine Voluma with other dermal fillers or surgical options for a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

What to Expect

What to Expect from Juvéderm Voluma® Injections

Voluma® injections are non-surgical and done on an outpatient basis in our office. While lidocaine is used in the formula to reduce discomfort, we can also apply a topical anesthetic if you choose.

Using a small needle, the doctor injects Voluma under the skin. The injections themselves take only about 10 to 15 minutes. You can go home immediately and resume your day.

Since Voluma’s results can last up to 2 years, we recommend that you start with a small amount of the product in the first visit. You can live with the results for a week or two and decide if you want to increase the amount of correction with another dose. You can always add more fullness, but it is much more difficult to get rid of Voluma after it has been injected. Our goal is not to just make things bigger but to make your face look natural and rejuvenated – not overdone. By providing a small amount in the first visit, we can ensure that you do not look as though you have been to a plastic surgeon. We also find that this gradual improvement allows you to receive the treatment discreetly, without anyone in your life noticing.

Most patients have 2 rounds of Voluma injections, but some have 4 to 5 rounds if they have significant volume loss.

The satisfaction rating with Voluma in our office has been 100%. We have yet to have someone tell us they don’t like the treatment or that they have had too much. Patients like it so much, in fact, that they want to know if they can enhance their jaw line or brow with it. We love to talk to our patients about all of their options for improving their appearance.

Your Recovery

Recovering from Juvéderm Voluma® Injections

Voluma® requires little or no downtime. In most cases, patients return to all of their normal activities within 24 hours.

You might experience some mild Juvederm Voluma side effects, such as temporary tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps, redness, and itching at the injection sites. In most cases, swelling, itching, and redness resolve within a few days. Lumps can be smoothed out through massage, which we will instruct you how to do.

“I have gone to Dr. Momeni numerous times, not for surgery, but for injections of Botox and cosmetic fillers. My goal has been to take a few years off of my aging face. I have been very happy with the results. I look more rested, less angry (my scowl creases are gone!), and just better. Dr. Momeni put me at ease as soon as I stepped into his office. He is very pleasant and takes lots of time with each patient. He listens and then thoroughly answers questions and explains treatments and procedures. I trust him. And I have enthusiastically recommended him to friends, confident that they would be as pleased as I have been.”
